The aft backrests provide 2 position back support. The first photo shows the sitting position, with the backrest supported by a piece of mahogany attached to the traveler track. In mild conditions or when motoring, you can lean back and run the boat from here.
Surprisingly, it is possible to start the motor without removing the port side backrest.

Here is the backrest in the reclining position. You have to bend your knees because of the short cockpit, but it's actually quite comfortable.

With the backrest removed, you can see the stainless steel support handle. When sailing in rough conditions without the backrests, it's a great handhold for the helmsman.

Here is a shot of the back side with the backrest in the sitting position. The three black clips snap over the handle when in the reclining position. There are three more for the sitting position.
The small HDPE block fits into a slot in the mahogany to prevent sideways motion. The bungee cord is easy to slip on and off - no fasteners are needed.
