Lifting Rudder
One of the main attractions of the P-19 was the ability to beach,
so we ordered the factory kickup rudder. After using it for a year, it
became obvious that a better design was needed. Though we made some
mods to improve raising/lowering, there are many other problems with
design.
The design goals for the new rudder were:
-
Stronger design that is less likely to fail
-
Ability to leave the rudder in place while trailering
-
Easy raising and lowering, preferably with one hand
-
No interference with the prop when raised
-
Ability to use the rudder in a partially raised position
-
Larger size for better control in rough conditions
-
True NACA foil shape for optimum lift/drag ratio
-
No increase in effective stern weight
Here are some photo's of the new rudder.
